Description

Note: For limited quantity and time, Phidisk PhantomKnight 2.5" SATA III SSD is upgraded to 240GB!

Note: This kit includes a USB3.0 SATA Shield, a metal case, and a Phidisk PhantomKnight 120GB 240GB 2.5" SATA III SSD

Combining with the Raspberry Pi 4 Model B board, it can be the NAS (Network Attached Storage), Media Server, or simple local cloud server in your home. Or maybe you just want to boot your huge Retropie image from SSD. SSD offers cheaper memory and faster booting time compared to MicroSD.

Yes, even booting Raspberry Pi OS from SSD (Phidisk PhantomKnight II) is much faster than the microSD card that we have. Here is the diagnostic result that we get using Raspberry Pi Diagnostics:

  • Sequential write speed 297890 KB/sec (target 10000) - PASS, nearly 30 times faster than the target
  • Random write speed 14948 IOPS (target 500) - PASS, nearly 30 times faster than the target
  • Random read speed 13149 IOPS (target 1500) - PASS, nearly 9 times faster than the target

If we compared with 128GB microSD(Phidisk):

  • Sequential Write: microSD is ~27MB/S, Phidisk SSD is 297MB/S. SSD is more than 10X faster than microSD
  • Random IOPS - Write: microSD is ~1000 IOPS, Phidisk SSD is ~14000 IOPS. SSD is more than 14X faster than microSD
  • Random IOPS - Read: microSD is ~2300 IOPS, Phidisk SSD is ~13000 IOPS. SSD is more than 5X faster than microSD

Note: Raspberry Pi Diagnosis result depends on many factors (New memory or used memory, interface, SATA interface, USB interface, USB cable, etc). It should be taken as a reference only.

The 2.5-inch SATA expansion board provides a complete storage solution for the newest Raspberry Pi 4 Model B, it supports up to 4TB 2.5-inch SATA hard disk drives (HDD) / solid-state drive (SSD). Only 2.5 inch SATA interface HDD/SDD hard disk is suitable for this Board.

Note: This is meant for the Raspberry Pi 4B mainboard only as of the placement of USB 3.0 port.

We have tested this expansion board with Phidisk PhantomKnight 120GB and 240GB 2.5" SATA III SSD.

The 2.5-inch PhantomKnightII SSD from Phidisk apparently has a maximum sequential read and write speed of up to 530MB/s and 430MB/s respectively. With Windows and Linux OS booting features, it consumes low power and heat. However, it can endure high temperatures, from 0°C up to 70°C. The SSD SATA also can endure shock and vibration.

Note: The Phidisk PhantomKnight II 2.5" SSD SATA III drive is PRE-LOADED with the Raspberry Pi OS, so you can use it with Raspberry Pi 4 Model B and the USB3.0 SATA Shield right out of the box (if the Raspberry Pi 4B is ready with USB boot)

The Raspberry Pi 4B is configured to boot over the USB port and manage to get amazing data access speed through this board.

However, we DO NOT recommend the use of Samsung SSD because it is found the EMC of Samsung SSD is quite high and might affect the operation.

Notes:

  • A microSD card is required for forcing the Raspberry Pi 4B board to boot from USB as its "root" partition if the Raspberry Pi 4B is not updated/upgraded to boot from USB yet.
  • WARNING: DO NOT power your Raspberry Pi via the Pi's 40-pin header and type-C socket at the same time.
  • USB 3.0 devices might generate radio frequency interference that can cause Wi-Fi and other wireless devices operating in the 2.4GHz band to have issues communicating with your Raspberry Pi 4B. To avoid interference on the 2.4GHz band using Wi-Fi, try using the 5GHz band instead. If the problem still exists, please turn off WiFi and use the wired network instead.

Not sure your Raspberry Pi 4B is ready for USB boot? Check these steps out:

Option 1: Do it from Raspberry Pi OS desktop with a monitor, keyboard, and mouse, going into the raspi_config, by leepspvideo:

Option 2: Format a blank microSD card (you need to back up in case you have only one microSD card) into FAT32, load the RPi4 EEPROM firmware using Raspberry Pi Imager(download from here). From Operating System->Misc Utility Images->Raspberry Pi 4 EEPROM boot recovery, choose your microSD card and load the image into it:

After the Raspberry Pi Imager loaded the EEPROM firmware into the microSD card, insert it into your Raspberry Pi 4B microSD card slot and power it up. After just 3 seconds, the EEPROM is updated with new firmware and it is ready for USB boot.

Option 3: Boot it directly if your Raspberry Pi 4B comes with the latest firmware in the EEPROM, nothing needed to be updated :)

The metal case with a power control switch and super mute cooling fan designed for Raspberry Pi 4 Model B with X825 2.5 inch SATA HDD/SSD storage board is a perfect choice for X825 V1.5 SSD/HDD storage board user. It also supports to install the X708 Power Management and UPS HAT board over Raspberry Pi.

Note: The fully utilize the Power Switch, we recommend using X708 Power Management and UPS HAT board.

Note: Raspberry Pi 4 Model B is NOT INCLUDED in the box.

Note: It is found that USB 3.0 high-speed transmission will interfere with the Raspberry Pi's 2.4G wifi signal. So if you find the 2.4GHz signal is unstable, please try to use WiFi 5GHz band instead. (Please refer to https://raspberrypiwiki.com/X825#Document)
