    Description

Everyone is talking about Long Range, aka LoRa. This is a new wireless technology, meant for Long Range and yet low power. In some cases, the battery can last for years.  RFM LoRa Shield is an Arduino shield that integrates the RFM95W LoRa module and is based on Open Source Library with any Arduino projects. It is compatible with Arduino UnoCT Uno, Maker Uno, Arduino Mega2560, and possibly other pin-compatible mainboards.

RFM Lora Shield allows users to send data and reach extremely long ranges at low data rates (< 50kbps). It provides ultra-long range spread spectrum communication and high interference immunity whilst minimizing current consumption, and targets professional wireless sensor network applications such as irrigation systems, smart metering, smart cities, smartphone detection, building automation, etc.

Using the LoRa modulation technique, RFM Lora Shield can achieve a sensitivity of over -148dBm using a low-cost crystal and bill of materials. The high sensitivity combined with the integrated +20 dBm power amplifier yields industry leading link budget making it optimal for any application requiring range or robustness. LoRa also provides significant advantages in both blocking and selectivity over conventional modulation techniques, solving the traditional design compromise between range, interference immunity, and energy consumption.

Besides supporting high-performance (G)FSK modes for systems including WMBus and IEEE802.15.4g, RFM Lora Shield also deliver exceptional phase noise, selectivity, receiver linearity, and IIP3 for significantly lower current consumption than competing devices. LoRa shield has stackable side headers which allow more Arduino-compatible shields to be stacked on top of it. It also has built-in grove sensor connectors, allowing users to integrate grove-based sensors into their applications. It has also provided an option for the user to integrate OLED with this shield for visual display.

This Cytron RFM shield (LoRa device) has been successfully tested with two types of LoRa gateway which are The Things Network and Helium. From our testing, we are able to get communication up to 1.5km using Cytron LoRa RFM shield and TTN gateway in our office area. This is the example results of our IoT project using the LoRaWAN network that display the temperature and humidity data from the DHT22 sensor. We open this IoT project to a public channel. You can visit our ThingSpeak channel to observe the live data here.

Note: LoRa is wireless communication technology, like all other wireless technologies, the wireless range depends on many factors: Obstacle, Line of Sight, Urban, suburban, rural, interference from other wireless waves, antenna position, and orientation. Plus, the spreading factor also can affect the data rate. LoRa specification stated it can reach up to 5km or more but it depends on all these factors. The longest distance achieved is 702km which is the world record!

Nowadays, the LoRa network has become very popular with the presence of Helium. For the time being, there is a total of 900,000 Helium hotspots around the world. So, with the huge amount of hotspots, coverage of the LoRa network should not be a problem anymore. Everyone can use the network for free without the need to ask permission from the hotspot owner. Therefore, this Cytron RFM shield is one of the best devices to use with the Helium network. From our testing, we are able to get communication up to 24km using the Cytron LoRa RFM shield and Helium hotspot in our office area. Figure below shows how the Cytron RFM shield successfully sends data to the Helium console using the LoRaWAN network.

Note: In this project, the RFM shield is stacked on CT-Uno and connected with grove DHT11.

Note: If you are using Arduino Uno compatible board like CT Uno and Maker Uno, you do not need to attach the additional header and the U.FL to SMA pigtail is optional to use, you can directly connect the antenna to the antenna port.

Note: If you are using Arduino Uno official board, you need to attach the additional header because of some technical problem. Plus, the U.FL to SMA pigtail is optional to use, you can directly connect the antenna to the antenna port.
