Heard of encoder switch? Do you have car radio set? The volume knob which can be rotated 360 degree? And you can feel the step? It is using rotary switch and sometime called rotary encoder. This is a 15-step/pulses rotary encoder with a nice "step" feel. Not to forget the center push provide a digital push button. We have mounted it on a breakout board and tested. It's breadboard friendly, of course you can also mount it with your project.
This is not a potentiometer. Potentiometer normally output voltage, rotary switch output pulses, you will need to detect it to know the rotary direction and step. The encoder is different from a potentiometer in that an encoder has full rotation without limits. The unit outputs gray code so that you can tell how much and in which direction the encoder has been turned.
This unit does not come with a knob.
