With the COVID-19 pandemic swapping the world since early 2020, the demand for USB webcams has spiked due to the work and learn-from-home trend, for the parents and also children.

The rising demand for USB webcams has also resulted in a spike in the price. Fear no more, we are getting a DIY USB Webcam with Raspberry Pi Zero W(low-cost) single-board computer for you. This kit here will get you a plug and use USB webcam within 10 minutes :)

With the contribution by many makers, for example, Jeff Gerling, that showcases the DIY USB Webcam with Raspberry Pi Zero with HQ Camera  + Lens. He also simplified the installation processes:

We packed a lower-cost version with a 5MP camera module and simplified the processes by getting the USB webcam-ready OS from showmewebcam. So basically, you get this kit, load the image from showmewebcam into the MicroSD card using Raspberry Pi Imager, insert it into the Raspberry Pi Zero, assemble the camera module into the official case, connect the USB micro B cable to your laptop/computer USB port, and wait for around 15 seconds, you will get the USB webcam ready for your conference call, Zoom, Google Meet, Microsoft Team, Streamyard, OBS, and other video streaming or recording apps.

With showmewebcam, you do not need to install a program in Raspberry Pi OS, it is ready as a USB webcam after it boots up on Raspberry Pi Zero. So you do not need a keyboard or mouse, or another monitor. For more detailed steps, please refer to our tutorial here. You can configure the USB webcam through the serial port using PuTty:

You can also get a smartphone holder and tripod (separately) to hold it properly during a conference call:
